In some circumstances, it may not be possible for a family to travel for an in-person assessment. The Literacy and Learning Centre also offers remote (online) assessments. These assessments are provided by Psychologists who are well-versed in using technology to meet the needs of families living in rural or remote locations, or overseas.
A secure video conferencing platform is used during the assessment sessions. Parent appointments pre- and post-assessment are also held via video conferencing, and any required assessment materials are sent in advance.
During the assessment sessions, a child completes a variety of assessment tasks with the psychologist. An adult is needed to provide in-person assistance with connecting to the video conferencing platform and with securely providing and collecting any required assessment materials. Every child’s needs are unique.
Remote assessments are typically appropriate for children 8 years of age and above, and are useful for examining potential learning difficulties (e.g., dyslexia, dyscalculia) or moderate difficulties with attention or executive functioning. Younger children, or those with significant difficulties with attention, behavior, or communication, may be better suited to an in-person assessment.
